Online Materials Education from Alfred University
The School of Art and Design at Alfred University is excited to offer a special opportunity for artists, students, educators, hobbyists, and manufacturers who are interested in learning about ceramic clays and glazes.
Our online classes are open to the public for ceramic makers of all levels. The classes are just as valuable to beginners who simply want to understand what happens with their materials as it is to professionals looking to refine and improve the performance and appearance of their materials. Professor Matt Katz has made it the focus of his career to take the complexities of ceramic materials and make them understandable and approachable to everyone.
The classes are also available for transferable undergraduate credits for students from other institutions.
We offer three online intensive courses
Topics: Introduction to Glazes Online
Topics: Introduction to Clays Online
Topics: Glaze Effects and Color (Glazes II)
Online Materials Education from Alfred University is taught by Matt Katz. Katz has taught ceramic material courses at The School of Art and Design at Alfred University for over 12 years. He received a BFA from The School of Art and Design and a MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Matt's extensive study at the Inamori School of Engineering and engagement as a studio artist have enabled him to design a new version of Ceramic Material Studies that combines the intuition of the artist with the science of the ceramic engineer. Katz strives to make complex subjects understandable for individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels.
This class was so valuable to me and the experience was beyond my expectations. The opportunity to take a class like this from a respected institution with a knowledgeable and thoughtful instructor from my computer at home was so beneficial.
