Monday March 26 Artist Lectures 5:00pm – 6:30 Binns Merrill Hall 106 (Room C) The Artstream Nomadic Gallery has been putting contemporary studio pottery on the street for over 15 years. Based in Carbondale, CO, the Artstream is a unique traveling exhibition space housed in a restored 1967 Airstream trailer. Since its debut tour in 2002, the Artstream has exhibited work by more than 150 national, international, and emerging ceramic artists, and has made stops in over 100 locations across the United States including universities, art centers, craft shows, roadsides, community colleges, farmers markets, and conference centers. Team Members John Cohorst and Justin Donofrio will be representing Artstream. This visit is funded by Alfred Clay Collective and the Division of Ceramic Art. Inspired by Pittsburgh’s three rivers and their spanning by 446 bridges, Trestle Draw: an Alfred graduate survey, spans three years of graduate student work from the Division of Ceramic Art of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. The exhibition will include more than 30 works by recent alumni and current candidates of Alfred University's MFA Program from the class of 2017, 2018, and 2019.
In the spirit of the theme for NCECA 2018 conference for building connections, entitled CrossCurrents: Clay and Culture, the works exhibited evoke the importance of a rich dialogue within contemporary ceramics at Alfred University. Each student’s physical and creative connection is what allows cultural narratives to pass from location to location. A drawbridge is a type of movable bridge that facilitates a cross current of travel. Similarly, Alfred University is continuously welcoming across its bridges a new guard. The recent transitions are reflected in new members of the faculty, each charged with the task of guiding current and future generations of students. As each structure activates and establishes footing on its forward bank, the creative currents continue to flow through and around with the passage of time. Three years of student work in relation to the university as a whole will provide a representation of the breadth and diversity of clay, its cultural structure, and the flowing nature of the creativity it inspires. Naturally occurring deposits of Alfred shale allowed for ceramic industry and subsequently Alfred University to be established in the Village of Alfred New York. Shale is a rock deposit that can be easily ground into a terra cotta clay and incorporated into a multitude of ceramic processes. The Celadon Terra Cotta Co. which was founded in 1889, were the first to use Alfred shale to manufacture architectural components including bricks, ornaments, and roof tiles. Alfred University was established shortly thereafter in 1900 and has been an important hub for ceramic research and innovation in the fields of art and engineering ever since. This informal showcase celebrates shale as the foundation of Alfred’s legacy and the reason it exists today. The artists have been asked to use Alfred Shale in some form, as a clay body, slip, glaze ingredient, or in its naturally-occurring state. Artists: Grant Landreth, Wanying Liang, Cory Mahoney, Liisa Nelson, Brian Westrick, Nora Arrieta, Brooke Cashion, Ruth Easterbrook, Andrés Monzón, Chase Travaille, Nicholas Weddell, Maura Wright, Jinsik Yoo.
